Q: when was the karmann ghia in production? what is the correct firing order on a 1970 1300 cc karmann?

A: I believe that they were built from 1955 till 1974; if my memory is still working (hey at my age, who knows) about 450,000 of them were made in both 2 door hardtop/coupe and convertible versions. They were last sold in the USA for the 1974 model year.

I cannot find my type manual, but I do believe that the second responder to your question is correct; it should be 1-4-3-2 for the firing order. (I haven’t worked on a type 1 or the varients in years; started with VW in 1980).

Hope this helps, a car nut.

Q: volkswagen Karmann Ghia?

A: Here a great place for Ghia parts:

Search for your model.

Q: Karmann Ghia Engine Sound?
how can i get a karmann ghia to sound like a car with flowmaster or it could sound like a sports racing car or a muscle car. i seen diferent ghias with the same engine the stock engine and they do something to it so it would sound nice and neat. well that sound leass anoying that the normal sound i never liked distortioned sound so please help thank you….. VW Lulu if you know something let me know thank you.

A: check out this web site, probably the biggest air cooled website on the internet. Use the search to find out more about exhaust, Learn about how an exhaust system effects the carburetor. The wrong exhaust can and will make a good engine run like crap. There are some systems that may give you the sound you want with out reducing the engines power but they are cheaply built and don’t last long. If the engine is to remain stock you could get away with just cutting the very ends of the peashooters off and pulling the insert out of them.

Here’s a site with VW parts. You have a Type 1 engine. not all exhausts will fit your car some are for offroad buggies.

Q: Karmann Ghia – 1978 VW SuperBeetle?
it has the label Karmann Ghia

so is this a 1978 Volkswagen SuperBeetle Convertible Edition Karmann Ghia?

can you tell me how much this car is worth?

i have seen a range from 9,000.00 to 19,000.00

PLEASE HELP~

A: Ghia had nothing to do with it. If it’s a Beetle convertible, it’s just “Karmann”. The Italian design firm of Ghia designed the KG’s body, but Karmann actually built the bodies for the KG and the Beetle convertible.
I’ve seen clean 78 & 79 Cabrios bring anywhere from $6000 to $18000.

Q: Volkwagen Karmann Ghia? Best year?
My son has been taken with the VW karmann Ghia. He has expressed a strong desire to buy one of these cars and restore it for personal use. He lives in British Columbia, Canada and will probably try to source a car there or down in California.

What were the best years for these cars?

And how were the convertibles? Were their tops as good as the Beetles?

A: I would look for a 71-74 model. In late 70 or so they upgraded the swing arm rear end to IRS (independent rear suspension) and made them 12V. They also went to the sought after 1600cc Dual Port engine. Now some of the older models were upgraded to 12V, and had Dual ports put in them, but they lack the IRS. I would look for a coupe myself, lots of moisture and snow and ragtops don’t mix!
Now he does realize the original heaters weren’t the best, they did make gas heaters as an option, but are hard to find nowadays. I have had a few, including one I put a newer water-cooled Rabbit engine in it, it solved the heat problem! Good luck with your search, I would try to find one as rust free as possible, what little heat you do get from the stock system has to run thru the body!

Q: karmann ghia restoration?
Is it worth restoring a Karmann Ghia? I found one at a price i can afford. But not sure if going to cost alot to restore… Should i just get a classic bettle instead??

A: Restoring either a Karmann Ghia or a Beetle to their original glory is expensive.

Beetle body parts are easier to come by compared to the Ghia, however, if properly restored the Ghia will be worth a lot more than the Beetle (due to their scarcity – fewer produced).

The Ghia is more difficult to work on with respect to the body.

I would grab it, Karmann Ghia’s do not come up regularly at a reasonable price.

Q: Karmann Ghia.. Good first car?
So i am 16 and i have been looking for a car. I love old cars, and thats pretty much all I can afford. In terms of mileage, i hear the Karmann Ghia is great, but for safety, what are your thoughts? what should i look out for?

A: Even though the Karmann Ghia is an excellent first car, I would stick with the type 1 Beetle. The Karmann Ghia no doubt has its advantages over a Beetle, including but not limited to: higher horsepower, better build quality, more luxurious interior (although it is still bare bones), bigger interior, more cargo space, more of a sports car feel, etc. The problem that you run into with them is the parts. Although they are still kind of easy to get, Beetle parts are much easier to come by. You can get all your mechanical parts at Auto Zone with the Beetle, but only some with the Karmann Ghia. Both are excellent first cars, especaially since both are cheap, easy to work on, and go up in value with age. The Karmann Ghia is a rarer car than the Beetle, thus the parts are harder. They do not have as much of a following, again making the parts harder. They are still pretty easy, but not nearly as easy as the Beetle.

And I do thank and congratulate you for your interest in becoming an aircooeld Volkswagen owner. Welcome to the world of aircooled Volkswagens. With these cars come a group of highly devoted enthusiests. I am one of them (hell, I got five). You will enjoy your ownership of your aircooled Volkswagen, no matter which model you chose.

Q: 1973 Karmann Ghia?
Is the 1973 Karmann Ghia legal for the streets and is it safe? Also does this look like a good one?http://www.carsoup.com/used/detail.asp?usedVehicleID=4241075&MakeID=76&minYear=1920&maxYear=2009&searchID=2597359&vehicleTypeID=1&UVViewID=4&Page=1&DealerGroupID=

A: Why wouldn’t it be legal? I had a ‘73 myself, but it was cursed with the infamous Automatic Stickshift tranny. As far as safety, they’re about as safe, of a bit safer than a Beetle of the same vintage.
I can’t see the car in your link: it takes me to the home page. Just make sure it’s in good running order, like you would any other car. Places to check for rust are the floors, rocker panels, quarters, around the tops of the headlights, & around the base of the windshield pillars. Five bucks says if you look inside the trunk, you’ll see evidence of the nose being hammered out. I’ve never seen a Ghia without past nose damage, as their beaks extend past their bumpers….

Q: VW: Bug, Bus, or Karmann Ghia?
What VW would you rather have, and why?

A VW Bug, Bus, or Karmann Ghia?

A: Ghia or the Thing. Either would be cool!

Q: 67 karmann ghia w/ ant problems WTF??
so my car is like i said a ‘67 karmann ghia coupe that has carpenter ants in it (the car was sitting next to the colonies tree b4 i resued it to restore it) does any1 know a way to get the bastards out without stinking up the car or paying for an exterminator?

A: Buy an indoor fogger such as the one shown in the link below. You can buy these at Wal Mart or most grocery stores. Cover your seats and dash with newspaper or some other material, roll up the windows, start the fogger, and close the doors to the car. It should take care of your problem. Let it sit overnight before opening the windows to air out the car.

There will not be any long lasting smell.

Q: Thinking of selling my ‘70 Karmann Ghia Conv.?
Decent ‘70 Karmann Ghia – needs floor pans & new top but otherwise in great shape. Orange paint OK, interior great with ashtray, lighter, chrome rims (no beauty rings), many new parts. Runs great – always starts. Anyone have any idea what I should ask for this?

A: Look around www.thesamba.com and see what a comparable car is worth. Screw ebay, as you will not get what it’s really worth.

Q: Karmann Ghia Warped Top???
My really great mom just bought me my first car~a really sweet ‘72 convertible Karmann Ghia. It’s in great shape body-wise, but the convertible top is slightly warped right in the center where it meets the windshield. Is this typical? Can it be fixed with some new mouldings? Someone told me the old tops were made of wood and they had a tendency to warp as a result….
it’s been garage kept since we got it 2 months ago…but it’s obvious that it would leak as you can see a sliver of daylight where it’s warped when you look very closely…
ps- my mom wrote that, i didn’t write “my really great mom”….although she is

A: Love you Nok Nok!

Q: karmann ghia mirror problem?
ok so i sent my ghia off to do the last few things to get it running, i get it back today and all i have left to do is put mirrors on it and rebuild the fuel gauge and speedometer.

My problem is that it’s a ‘67 ghia so i ordered ‘67 side mirrors but they don’t fit so i’m assuming someone bought a ‘67 and put ‘65 doors on it so my side mirror is too large to fit in the pre-drilled holes on teh door.

here’s my question: on the car’s door there is a hole about 1/2-3/4 in with holes about 1/8-3/16 in diameter spaced about 1/4 in to the front of the hole and 1/2 an inch to the back. Does this sound like an old style mirror or is it or mismatched hodgepodge situation that’s gonna have me running all over the place looking for the right mirror

P.S. sry for the lack of exact measurements but what i told you is about as close as i can get at the moment.

A: sounds like someone put after market mirrors on it
